WL

This 1950 Harley WL 45 is a survivor that has been brought to sound mechanical health.. It isn’t perfect, but it is a motorcycle that is dripping with the sort of character that makes these machines so attractive. The sheet metal is genuine Harley , There are very few reproduction parts on this bike. The engine has been transplanted sometime in it's history, the engine is 1942 WLA. She is titled as a 1950 because that is the year of the chassis. Harley WLs are easy to start and easy to ride. They are know for reliability and parts availability is excellent. They are very easy to work on. Blue Moon Cycle loves Harley WLs, we always have several available for sale in all price ranges. Because the engine is not the engine that came in this bike when it left Milwaukee, the price is a bit lower. This bike runs and rides great, she's mechanically sound and ready for the road.

WL

1949 Harley-Davidson WL "45"

Following the Harley-Davidson R Model, the 45 cubic inch WL made a long successful run as a universal motorcycle starting in 1937. The WL was replaced by the Harley-Davidson K Model in 1952, and the middle-weight side-valve Harley-Davidson continued.

While using a slightly lower tech design than the 61 cubic inch OHV EL, the “flathead” WL 45 was the backbone of Harley’s lineup. Not only did it serve well as a courier machine with tens of thousands manufactured for World War II, but also in numerous two and three-wheeled versions. And it was the mount of choice for many police departments. The WL series also enjoyed great commercial service and was the basis of a machine for the 750cc, 45 cubic inch Class C racing series which AMA launched in 1934; the Harley-Davidson WR.

For comparison, the WL is the basic model, with the sportier WLD, which used a higher compression ratio, referred to as the Special Sport Solo. Wheel sizes, styling and trim were nearly identical to the “big twin” EL and later FL, but the scaled down WL’s have a shorter wheelbase and less weight which offered more nimble handling. This machine has been painted a special non-stock color, treated to chrome wheels and light bar, a windshield, crash bar, fender guard and a later buddy seat with grab rail.

Ending a long and venerable heritage, the WL model was discontinued, though WL engine production continued through 1973 for the three-wheeled Servi-Car. Competing better with British offerings, the 1952 K Model was Harley’s first production machine with rear suspension with the big twins following in 1958.

Specifications:

Engine: 45 Degree Side Valve V-Twin

Displacement: 45 Cubic Inches / 750 cc’s

Bore & Stroke: 2.75″ x 3.81″

Carburetor: Linkert

Ignition: 6V Battery, Points & Coils

Primary: Duplex Chain

Starting: Kick Only

Clutch: Dry, Multi-disk

Transmission: 3-Speed, Hand Shift

Frame: Single Down Tube

Suspension: Springer Fork / Rigid Rear, Sprung Seat

Brakes: Drum, Internal Expanding

Wheels/Tires: 5.00 x 16 / 5.00 x 16

Wheelbase: 57.5″

Weight: 530 Pounds

Our 1949 WL is a recent restoration in great shape. 1948 Harley-Davidson WL "45" Flathead A in Norcross, GA
$35,000

Used 1948 Harley-Davidson Classic / Vintage

WL "45" Flathead A

Harley Davidson WL with Goulding Rocket sidecar.

Harley-Davidson's first flathead V-twin appeared in 1929 as the Model D. Its 45-cubic-inch engine was smaller than the company's existing 61- and 74-cubic-inch F-head V-twins, which then became known as "Big Twins."

They later switched to a flathead design the following year, but those larger engines were neither as reliable nor as long-lived as the under stressed "Forty-five."

Though the Forty-five was no powerhouse, it proved to be a versatile engine that remained in production for more than four decades.

During that time it served duty not only in street motorcycles, but also in three-wheeled Servi-Cars (1933-1973), military WLAs of the 1940s, and WR racing bikes of the 1940s and 1950s.

By 1948, the Forty-five was powering a street model called the WL. It looked very similar to Harley's Big Twin flatheads of the era, the most noticeable visual difference being that WLs had their drive chains on the right side of the bike, while Big Twins had them on the left.

Though 1948 would prove to be the final year for Big Twin flatheads, the WL lasted through 1951

110 years ago James Goulding made his first sidecar in Melborn Australia .In 1920, James decided to introduce his product in America. He did this with a 12,000 mile tour of the U.S. using a 1917 Harley "J' Model 1000cc with his sidecar. One part of this tour was a transcontinental run from New York to San Francisco. Goulding became the factory supplier to Harley Davidson and Indian and became the largest producer of sidecars in the USA. The Goulding Rocket sidecar was the most futuristic sidecar in the 1940's. The Goulding brackets are made specifically for the Haley WL series, making it the ideal sidecar for this motorcycle. There is nothing more stylish than a Goulding sidecar attached to the streamlined 1948 Harley.

This motorcycle is highly original, with few or zero reproduction parts, it has received only a repaint of the sheet metal some years ago. The title indicates this motorcycle has a little over 12,000 life time total miles. It starts on one or two kicks, it is a pleasure to ride, the sidecar tracks straight and true. Yes, it could be restored to the next level but in our opinion it should be preserved just as is. This bike has been in the personal collection of our owner John Landstrom since 2009. This is the first time it has been offered for sale. Call John for details 770 447 6945 x 20

1946 Harley-Davidson WL "45" Flathead A in Norcross, GA
$32,500

Used 1946 Harley-Davidson Classic / Vintage

WL "45" Flathead A

1946 Harley-Davidson WL Stroker Flathed

The best of everything

This wonderfully restored 1946 Harley-Davidson WL is the absolute workhorse of the Milwaukee lineup, earning accolades as a soldier in World War II and having the longest production run of any Harley-Davidson motor while also acquitting itself amazingly well on the race track. That was Harley-Davidson in a nutshell: building V-twins with enough meat to make them indestructible and enough room in the castings to carve out airspace for better breathing and higher horsepower. It certainly helped that the W series of 45s had a four-cam timing chest, which meant they inherited many years of tuning expertise from Harley-Davidson’s factory racers, so when Class C racing for catalog-stock motorcycles was introduced in 1934, the company had a machine that could duke it out with the best and come out on top. Racing versions of the Model W included the WR and WRTT, which were still taking victories at races like Daytona in the postwar era and even taking the Grand National Championship in 1947-1950. The WL has broken records on all the nation’s race tracks, and it is providing hundreds of thousands of riders many happy hours of pleasant, economical, and trouble-free rides.”

This WL is something special, its the personnel bike of Blue Moon Cycle owner John Landstrom for the last 18 years. It comes with an inch tall stack of receipts for all the work that went into its restoration. Documentation includes the following engine work: Complete lower end rebuild with custom made S&S flywheels to 54 inch stroker 4 7/16 stroke, sportster polished rods, WLDR cams , Venolia custom made pistons, machined and polished heads, NOS exhaust valves, Chevy ¼ inch oversize intake valves, copper head gaskets, K model valve springs, Jims pinion shaft, WLD intake manifold, 1971 G model cycliders ported and relieved, machined nipple threads, NOS Harley rings with Hastings oil rings, Cases clearanced for stroker flywheels and front cylinder oiler added. Longer cylinder studs. M51 carburetor, modified air filter cover with foam filter. 33 tooth sproket, breather valve “Z” cut. Compression ratio is 6.5/1

New fork springs, spokes and wheels built by Buchannans, Fork rebuilt with all new bearings and bushings, new clutch, new racing compound brakes, completely rebuilt gearbox, it's really getting to be too much to list here, I am not 1/4th thru the receipts . Lets just say this was a no expense spared restoration done in 1996 using only the best high performance parts.. It has been in my possession since 2004, I ride it regularly and it runs and sounds more like a sportster than a WL. If you want the best Harley WL street bike in the world, this could be it. It was a Harley Davidson calendar bike around 2002

Feel free to call me for more details or to schedule a test ride. John Landstrom 770 447 6945

WLA A

This is a World War 2 era WLA Pennsylvania Civil Defense motorcycle. What make this bike a cut above the rest? Most WLAs offered today were shipped to Europe or Russia for the war effort. Most have been restored or built from several different motorcycles along with the millions of spare parts the Army had produced for maintenance in the field. Since this motorcycle was Civil Defense, it never left our boarders. The original Pennsylvania Dept of Revenue metal plate is affixed to the fork and provides the VIN that the motorcycle is titled under, the engine case has never been stamped. The paint appears to be mostly original but it's possibly an older repaint. We have applied the Civil Defense stickers which can be easily removed if desired. This motorcycle has been inspected and serviced by Blue Moon Cycle and our owner John Landstrom continues to ride it at least once a week. It is in excellent running condition and all systems function properly. Speedometer indicates 3044 believable miles. If you want an authentic WLA that is fun and easy to ride, this bike is for you. We can arrange shipping or you can fly in and ride it home. Call John for more details 770 447 6945 x 20
