<p>2007 BMW R 1200 S </p><p>Prior to the dashing red-and-silver streak before you, BMW’s twin-cylinder sportbike was the R1100S, introduced in 1999. It was a groundbreaker by virtue of having BMW’s most powerful opposed flat twin to date, with a claimed 98 horsepower at the crank and 500 rpm higher redline of 8,400. It was also the first boxer with a six-speed transmission. These features alone suggested that the German company was serious about the sporting intent of the R1100S, but this is also a class in which BMW will only go so far with its R-series bikes. Their traditional shaft final drives and BMW’s insistence upon long-distance comfort-or at least the intention of it-limits any boxer “sportbike” BMW produces to more of a sport-touring role, at least when compared to motorcycles most riders consider true sportbikes.</p><p>The same is probably true of the all-new <strong>2007 R1200S</strong>, but if I hadn’t told you, you may never have found out. Once again we have BMW’s most powerful boxer engine to date, now with a claimed 122 horsepower and 83 lb-ft of torque at the crank, in the “hex head” engine introduced in the 2005 R1200GS. At 482 pounds ready to ride with a full tank, weight is down from the R1100S by a claimed 29 pounds, and cornering clearance is increased. Twin mufflers are stacked under that very businesslike tailsection in serious sportbike style, which only allows the addition of a seatbag-no hard luggage will be offered. Yet the bike retains a very reasonable seating position that is much more comfortable than the awkward ergonomics of its R1100S predecessor, and still has the trademark Paralever single-sided swingarm instead of a chain. Granted it’s the lighter and more aggressive-looking EVO version from the GS, with its top-mounted torque arm and 50mm hole in the final drive, but the number of current “sportbikes” with shaft finals can be counted on one hand. BMW says that because of these things its version is a “sportbike with character.”</p><p>So which is it, sportbike or sport tourer? As you may have surmised, the R1200S Character Sport is both. On the gas the bike’s only limitations are the traditional BMW driveline-which has some lash and requires deliberate shifts using the clutch-and the harshness of the standard suspension, easily fixed by throwing some dollars in the √Oñhlins package. A 6-inch-wide rear wheel for mounting a 190/50-size tire is available for incurable go-fasters, too. For getting there, the bike is far more comfortable than much of the competition, and is further enhanced in this area with that decent little windscreen, optional soft luggage and heated grips. <p>The heart of any motorcycle is its powerplant … the way it looks, feels, performs. There is no compromise in the R 1200 C. The cons are few but should be stated: there are some pock marks in the clear coat on the fork legs (similar to what you would see on most Harleys); there is also a little pitting on the auxiliary light mounting brackets; the gas tank paint has a few blisters on the topside. MUCH less than typical wear for a bike of this age and mileage, and you have to lean in quite close to see any of it. In fact, from two or three paces back you’d say this bike was absolutely museum-worthy. But do you want to put it in a museum? Hell, NO! You want to RIDE it!</p><p>And since you’re going to ride it, you’ll be glad to know that this machine is in impeccable mechanical condition. It has been checked top-to-bottom, every component and function tested to assure optimum safety, performance and reliability. It has NEW TIRES front & rear, new stainless steel brake lines, a NEW BATTERY, it got a complete fuel system treatment  including new fuel pump and lines. <p>Quirky and eclectic, like many of the motorcycles we love, Moto Guzzi'a heavyweight cruisers like this 1998 EV1100 are considered something of an acquired taste, with a small but intensely loyal following. A large part of their charm can be traced directly the sport bike DNA that infuses nearly all Guzzis, and to these bikes' sophisticated simplicity.</p><p>Built on what's essentially an early LeMans Sport bike platform, the EV comes equipped with such non-cruiser like features as a fully adjustable suspension; the front fork has provisions to set compression and rebound damping, while the rear shocks carry spring preload and damping adjusters (there's even an adjustable hydraulic steering damper. Braking is handled by robust dual four-piston Brembo front calipers, squeezing 320mm floating rotors, while out back there's a single two piston caliper clamping down on a fixed, 282mm disc. The brakes are linked, with the foot pedal operating through a proportioning valve that controls the left front and the rear caliper, while the hand lever operates the right front caliper independently. It's unusual to find these kind of components on any cruiser, let alone one of this vintage.</p><p>The 1100cc pushrod-actuated, fuel-injected two-valve, 90? V-twin develops 70 ft-lb of torque and 72 horsepower at 5,000 and 6400 rpm (respectively) which gets the 552 lb. bike down the road in a pretty lively though not exactly mind-blowing fashion, though that's way more power than most bikes its size. The engine is mounted transversely, which both quells vibration and facilitates shaft drive (and adds that funky torque effect).  Givi top box and Hepco & Becker sidecases offered as moto guzzi accessories have been added. The windshield brackets are there but no windshield. Rear turnsignal stantions will be replaced. </p><p>With friendly ergos and a reliability that's second to none, the Guzzi EV makes a terrific all-around motorcycle, especially for the rider that prefers something out of the mainstream -- yet still classically Italian. <p>For years BMW has offered buyers a varied line-up of sport bikes, tourers, and dual-purpose machines with engine configurations ranging from twins to triples to fours. Despite this wide range of styles and powerplants, not since 1967 has BMW built a single-cylinder machine designed for the beginning rider.</p><p>That has changed with the 1997 F650. With its unintimidating 652cc single-cylinder engine, lightweight chassis, great ergonomics and tremendous flexibility, it just may have been worth the wait.</p><p>Inspiration for BMW's F650, dubbed the Funduro in Europe, came when company representatives visited Aprilia's factory in Italy. At that time, Aprilia was in the final stages of production on their Pegaso 650, a high-performance bike powered by Rotax's liquid-cooled five-valve single. The innovative German firm quickly recognized the benefit of cooperative effort between these manufacturers, and immediately sought their assistance in releasing a similar model. By using a Rotax engine in a bike built by Aprilia, all to BMW specifications, an important beginner-level bike could be added to their line at a competitive price.</p><p>Shorter riders will be glad to hear that BMW offers a lowering kit for the F650. Unlike other BMWs with adjustable seat heights, the lowering kit actually drops the center of gravity, via a modified swingarm and shock stop. The BMW 650 offered here includes the lowering kit.</p><p>BMW's F650 is a complete, refined motorcycle that'll do many things well. It's as capable of exploring bumpy dirt roads as it is commuting or highway touring. As for stopping power, the Honda XL 185 S braking system includes Expanding brake size at the front and Expanding brake size at the back. These are great bikes for city commuting or riding cow trails in the country. <p>Nice little bike. Great for commuting, but entirely capable of a cross-country trip. Kawasaki had been looking at the success of Honda’s little four-stroke twin, the CB350, which had modest performance but all the amenities Americans seemed to like, including an electric starter. Kawasaki’s R&D backroom boys put their heads together, drew up plans and came forth with a very efficient, if rather uninspired, 398cc vertical twin, with a 360-degree crankshaft, an overhead camshaft and an electric leg.</p><p>The frame was a simple double cradle having dual downtubes, with a big, fat backbone tube meeting up with the cradle at the swingarm pivot, a very solid affair that avoided any notion of flexiness. Front fork was by Kawasaki, very much like a Ceriani, and on the inexpensive, non-adjustable side. Five inches of travel was good, with a 27-degree rake and trail of approximately four inches offering a very middle-of-the-road stance. The swingarm ran out 20 inches, bouncing along on a cheap pair of Kawasaki shock absorbers having preload adjustability and three inches of travel. Too soft, reviewers said.</p><p>Spoked wheels were both 18 inchers, the front carrying a 3.25 tire, the rear, 3.50. Braking was done by a single 226mm (10.91-inch) disc on the front, a 180mm (7.09-inch) drum on the back. As a polite reviewer might say, adequate. But this was not intended for sporting riding like the Z-1, and the brakes worked fine for commuter use. The wet-sump engine was straightforward, being slightly oversquare with a 64mm bore, 62mm stroke. Of minor note was the chain-driven counter-rotating balancer system down in the crankcase, called “harmonic” by one reviewer. It did not smooth out all vibrations, but for anyone happy to ride at two-thirds of redline (9,000 rpm) it was entirely adequate. The four valves, two per cylinder, were pushed down by a single overhead camshaft, and 36mm Keihin CV carbs fed high-test gas (preferred) and air into the combustion chambers, where it was compressed 9:1. The engine was rated by the factory at 35 ponies, which was usually measured at the crankshaft, not the rear wheel; on a dyno it was closer to 29.
